In an interview with GameRant, Eric Bright of GameStop made some interesting comments regarding the potential of the Nintendo Switch.
“The Nintendo Switch is off to a start right now that it could possibly eclipse the Wii. Initial sales on this have been phenomenal. I can’t give straight numbers, but I can say we’re seeing one of the highest attach rates of software and accessories to a device that we’ve seen in a long time.”
The Nintendo Wii is an outlier, as far as Nintendo home consoles go. At 101.63 million units sold worldwide, it vastly outperforms every other Nintendo console ever sold. The Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom comes in second at only 61.91 million units sold worldwide. The Wii also featured the highest attach rate of any Nintendo console, about 9 games sold for every system.
Sales of the Switch have been hampered by limited availability though Nintendo has recently announced plans to double production for the year from 8 million units to 16 million units, more than the Wii U sold over the course of its lifetime.
Hopefully this success can translate to third party support, an issue that has plagued Nintendo home consoles dating back to the Nintendo 64. If successful, Nintendo could regain their place as kings of the gaming world.
